Careif Trustee Professor Afzal Muhammad Javed receives an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours

The Centre for Applied Research and Evaluation, International Foundation (Careif) – is proud to announce that trustee Professor Afzal Muhammad Javed has received an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2025, for services to mental health care.
Professor Javed reflected on the news:
“I feel privileged & honoured to be receiving such a prestigious award; this recognition will continue to motivate many other mental health professionals for their commitment, enthusiasm & dedication for their future work focusing on the wellbeing of people with mental illness.”
Professor Afzal Javed is a UK Consultant Psychiatrist, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the Chairman of Pakistan Psychiatric Research Centre, Fountain House, Lahore, Pakistan, a Senior Fellow of the International Institute for Geopsychiatry in Bern, Switzerland, and the Immediate Past President of the World Psychiatric Association.
Professor Dinesh Bhugra CBE, a Patron of Careif, commented on the news:

During his role as senior psychiatrist providing services to people with mental illness in the UK and Pakistan. He has led the World Psychiatric Association over a tumultuous period and led on various international policy initiatives".
Professor Javed is a distinguished pioneer and a life time practitioner in the field of mental health; has been a role model for young professional colleagues with his enthusiasm and dedication for promoting mental health as a discipline. In his NHS role he was passionate advocate for patients’ families and carers, calling for compassion, human dignity and understanding.
Remarking on this news, Dr Albert Persaud, the co-founder of Careif, said:

He has also played a pivotal role in multiple charities, including as chairman of Richmond Fellowship Foundation International which worked extensively in Commonwealth countries to establish rehabilitation facilities for people with mental illness.
