Afzal Javed

Professor Afzal Javed is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Honorary Professor at the Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham and an Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at the Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick. He is also chairman of the Pakistan Psychiatric Research Centre and a Board member of Fountain House Lahore.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and has also been awarded with Fellowships of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of Edinburgh and Ireland. He has served the Royal College of Psychiatrists as Deputy and Associate Registrar and Chairman of the College’s West Midlands Division. He was elected to the Honorary Fellowship of the College in 2023.

His role in international psychiatry is highlighted by his last lead position as President of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) from October 2020 to October 2023. He has also been the Past President of both the Asia Federation of Psychiatric Associations (AFPA) from 2017-19 and the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR) from 2012-15.
