Young People: Mental capital, mental disorders, resilience and wellbeing through their life course

The 2012 London Olympics are ‘a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ to achieve a lasting health legacy. In support of this legacy, London will play host to an iconic event that will focus on the new frontiers faced by Young People in the global world. Participants from across the globe will gather to discuss, debate and formulate action. The list of topics is broad, challenging and of importance to diverse disciplines, including psychology, religious studies, cultural studies, psychiatry, social sciences, anthropology, political science, arts and the laws, reflecting the complex definitions of culture that underpins cultural psychiatry and its practice and research.

Psychiatry will encapsulate a broadband of themes relevant to young people physical and mental health abilities, physical health, emotional well being and recovery. The congress will consider the role of arts, laws and humanities in wider society in promoting the wellbeing of young people in a diverse and global village. Young people are participating in and evaluating the event. Research competitions for young researchers (by poster and oral presentations) will be judged.

The London bid for the Games succeeded largely because of the diverse cultural population of London and the desire to reach young people all around the world, to connect them with the inspirational power of the Games so they are motivated to choose sport.

Young People are faced with many new frontiers of mental distress in the global world of cultural and psychiatry, the focus on life-course, well being, resilience, Sport allows people from all backgrounds to come together to join in positive activity and can help our young people to stay both physically and mentally healthy.
